Why do we focus on planting native species?
There are many reasons why it is better to plant native plants and trees:
· They help the environment.
· They conserve water better.
· Do not require fertilizers.
· Do not need pesticides.
· Are resistant to local weather.
· Are not invasive.
· Help control erosion.
· Restore natural habitats.
· Preserve biodiversity.
Native species have evolved over thousands of years, learning to thrive in their natural area. They grow in harmony with the environment, the soil, the water supply, the varying weather throughout all the seasons, and they share it with their native companions. Their root systems are deep, acclimated to the soil and to the average precipitation, whether it is high or low. Their stems and leaves can handle the changing local conditions. They are part of a larger natural ecosystem. Many insects, birds, and animals depend on native plants and trees for food and shelter.
Native plants and trees that evolve together create a harmonic ecosystem. They develop an efficient means of co-existence in which one plant’s growth habits doesn’t interfere with the other.
